The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses linked to peanut butter products. J. M. Smucker Co. is recalling select Jif® Peanut Butter products due to the potential for certain lots of products to be contaminated with Salmonella. The CDC and FDA are investigating the outbreak alongside local health officials. As of now, 14 illnesses have been reported in 12 states.

Jif brand peanut butter has been recalled after being linked to a salmonella outbreak. J. M. Smucker Co. is voluntarily recalling select Jif® peanut butter products sold in the U.S. because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall affects different types and sizes of Jif peanut butter, including creamy, crunchy, natural, and reduced-fat. The affected products have lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425, with “425” at the end of the first 7 numbers.

How many illnesses have been reported?
As of May 21, 2022, a total of 14 illnesses have been reported from 12 states. Two people have been hospitalized, but there have been no deaths.
“Five out of five people reported consuming peanut butter and four of the five people specifically reported consuming different varieties of Jif brand peanut butter prior to becoming ill,” the FDA said.
Which states are affected?
The 12 states with reported illnesses are: Arkansas (1), Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Massachusetts (1), Missouri (1), Ohio (1), North Carolina (1), New York (1), South Carolina (1), Texas (2), Virginia (1), and Washington (1).
While distribution has been confirmed for the states listed above, the recalled peanut butter was distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets.
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause an infection called salmonellosis. Symptoms of salmonellosis include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Most people get better within a week, but some may develop severe illness, including bloodstream infections.
