Listeria Forces Ham Sandwich Product Recall in Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Cuisine Fraicheur Urbaine, based in Saint-Laurent, Quebec, Canada, have issued a voluntary recall of Cuisine Fraicheur Urbaine-brand Black Forest Ham Sandwich due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated after CFIA testing discovered the presence of Listeria in the recalled product.ย  This recall is classified as a Class I recall, meaning that there is a high risk that consuming the food could lead to severe health problems or death.

Distribution

The recalled item was distributed only in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The affected product should be returned to the place of purchase or should be disposed of immediately. Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that have come into contact with the recalled products. Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the company at [email protected] or the CFIA toll free by phone in Canada and the United States at 800-442-2342 or by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

There have been no reported cases of illness or injuries in connection with the consumption of the recalled products.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Commenting on this article, the nationโ€™s leading Listeria lawyer said, โ€œSimilar to last yearโ€™s recall of Boarโ€™s Head products, this is another recall of a deli meat-based product due to Listeria contamination. I strongly advise consumers with this product in their homes to stop eating it immediately as a Listeria infection can be very dangerous.โ€
