Big Olaf Creamery Has Not Issued A Recall

Companies typically issue voluntary recalls after an outbreak which Big Olaf has yet to do. The FDA can require a dangerous product be recalled, but there are no signs of a recall yet.

The Florida Department of Health directed Big Olaf to “suspend sales and production until further notice. They informed us that they’d be contacting those that serve their product to recommend that they stop serving.”

“It appears that they aren’t necessarily taking our advice,” spokesman Jeremy Redfern said in an email to the Bradenton Herald.

How many illnesses have been reported?

As of July 7, 2022, a total of 23 illnesses and two deaths have been reported from 10 states. Of the 23 illnesses, 22 have been hospitalized with severe symptoms according to reports.

“The investigation is ongoing,” says food safety lawyer Tony Coveny, “and there remains a great deal we do not know at this time. We are confident, however, that the FDA, CDC, and state and local authorities will quickly bring things into greater focus.”

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause a foodborne illness called listeriosis. Listeria can be found in various foods and can grow at refrigerator temperatures.
