Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. Listeria Lawyer Update: Listeria Outbreak Linked to Dole Packaged Salads.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have issued a health alert involving Dole brand packaged salads due to potential listeria contamination. The FDA also announced their involvement in the investigation regarding a potential listeria outbreak linked to the potentially contaminated salad bags on December 22, 2021. This is the second outbreak linked to salad products that have been announced in the last few weeks, the first being the listeria outbreak linked to Fresh Express Packaged Salad.
This recent outbreak announcement also updated the number of reported illnesses due to the Dole packaged salads. According to the FDA, the number of reported illnesses linked to the listeria outbreak has risen to 16 cases, out of the reported cases 12 have required hospitalization and sadly 2 deaths have been linked to the outbreak. Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. issued a voluntary recall of salads processed at two of their facilities in Bessemer City, NC, and Yuma, AZ on December 22, 2021. The recall of the salad products processed from both facilities was issued after samples were taken from each facility and were tested by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Both samples taken from each facility tested positive for the strain of Listeria monocytogenes linked to the outbreak.
Both the FDA and CDC are urging consumers who may have purchased the potentially contaminated salad products to refrain from eating them or serving and dispose of them as soon as possible. The “Best if Used By” date of the contaminated salads ranges from Nov. 30, 2021, to Jan. 8, 2022, and the full list of the recalled lot numbers can be found on the FDA webpage. At this time the 16 cases linked to the outbreak have been reported from the 13 states IA, ID, MD, MI, MN, NC, NV, OH, OR, PA, TX, UT, and WI, but according to the FDA the possibility of more people have been affected but have yet to be diagnosed if still very high.
People affected by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria normally experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases a person diagnosed with Listeriosis, an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, can exhibit more severe symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions, in such cases, the infection may have spread to the nervous system. Ron Simon, a National Listeria Lawyer, stated:
“Generally, a person with listeriosis experiences fever and muscle aches. These symptoms are often preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In cases where a diagnosis of listeriosis occurs, the infection is generally an “invasive” infection, which means that the Listeria has spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract and into other parts of the body. Common diagnosis are meningitis and encephalitis.”
